Letter From Captain John Lecrivain

Team,

On Aug 3, 2022, I joined all of the other patrol station captains and the Sheriff at an event in Whittier. During the event, we were introduced to a charitable organization working to help children who are placed into the foster care system. The organization was founded and is being led by a retired detective from the Los Angeles Police Department.

He spent the majority of his career investigating child abuse and family crimes. The organization, "Shield 4 Kids," has just a few targeted projects which have had an impact on many children placed in the foster care system. One of those projects we have been asked to participate in is the Backpack Care Package. Shield 4 Kids has assembled hundreds of backpacks, filled with age-specific items which we have been asked to give to children we take into protective custody and release to DCFS for placement. Unfortunately, when we take children from homes and place them into protective custody, we do not always have the ability to include personal items (in some cases there are not any to bring) with the children. These backpacks have some personal care items as well as blankets and stuffed toys for the children.

Each station was given eight (4 boys/4 girls) backpacks. They are age-specific, so the contents vary. I included a picture of our first set so you can recognize them. They have been placed in the lower cabinets in the Captain’s Conference room. If you give one away, please let Operations know via email, call, or stop by, and we will send the request for replacement.

I have also attached a few photos of our first gifting. A young boy was abandoned by his mother and ended up in our care. While he was awaiting the DCFS response, LET Villalobos gave him his backpack. It appears he was so happy, he put it on right then and there. Hopefully, he is young enough not to remember, but I know all those involved in this case will.

Thank you, Shield 4 Kids.
